Xylitol är en väldigt speciell kolhydrat och ett bra sockeralternativ vid sport och träning. Den har visat sig öka både energiproduktionen och fettförbränningen, samt aktivera glutation, en antioxidant som skyddar kroppen mot extra stress under träning.1,4,6
Energi utan insulin
Xylitol är det enda sockeralternativet som kan producera energi utan att först omvandlas till glukos/fruktos samt utan behov av insulin. Detta är speciellt intressant för människor på lågkolhydratdiet (LCHF/LCHQ/Dukan/GI) eller med insulinproblem.
Många sockeralternativ och sötningsmedel som t.ex. erytritol (Sukrin) och stevia passerar igenom kroppen nästan helt utan att brytas ner, men studier talar för att kroppen kan använda över 90% av xylitolen som en långsam energikälla.2
Xylitol och ATP
När du tränar använder kroppen energikällan ATP. Utan ATP kan du inte röra dig eller andas. Av den xylitol du får i dig, absorberas ca 25 % direkt i kroppen och kan skapa ATP genom en process som samtidigt producerar NADH som aktiverar glutation1,3, en av kroppens viktigaste antioxidanter. Resten av xylitolen används som fibrer av bra bakterier i tarmarna och omvandlas till kortkedjiga fettsyror som även de ger långsam energi utan att stimulera insulinproduktionen.
Xylitol har även visat sig vara antikatabolt (förhindrar muskelnedbrytning), samt hjälpa mot muskeltrötthet.1,5 Att förhindra katabolism är extra viktigt vid hård träning eftersom kroppen då slutar använda andra energikällor och i stället börjar bryta ner muskler.
LCHF, träning och prestanda

Det är svårare att träna hårt på en LCHF diet. Detta gäller för alla lågkolhydratdieter, som LCHF, LCHQ, Dukan, Låg GI och Atkins.
LCHF idrottscyklister
När Dr Steve Phinney gjorde sin doktorsavhandling om idrottscyklister som började med LCHF diet, fann han att det tog minst två veckor för deras kroppar att anpassa sig och prestera på en vanlig nivå igen. Deras sprintkapacitet kom däremot inte tillbaka till den tidigare nivån.
LCHF och glykogenuppladdning
Det är svårare att träna hårt på en LCHF diet, eftersom glykogendepåerna inte fylls . Det går inte att köra glykogenuppladdning på samma sätt och det går inte att uppnå samma nivå av glykogeninlagring. Glykogen hjälper dig träna hårt eftersom det är en lättåtkomlig energikälla för muskulaturen. Xylitol kan göra samma sak utan behov av insulin och utan att först konverteras till glukos/fruktos. Dessutom har xylitol även visat sig öka fettförbränningen och förhindra katabolism. 1,6
Träna hårdare och maximera viktminskningen med xylitol
Poängen med en LCHF diet och andra lågkolhydratsdieter, är att tvinga kroppen att bränna fett som främsta energikälla, så din träningsprestanda blir direkt kopplad till hur snabbt din kropp bränner fett. Eftersom xylitol bidrar till ATP produktion och även ökar fettförbränningen, kommer du med xylitol kunna träna hårdare och samtidigt maximera viktminskningen. 1,4,6
Dr Steve Phinney rekommenderar svagt iste med xylitol som sportdryck. Kombinationen av xylitol och koffeinet från te ökar fettförbränningen och därmed prestandan.

Studier visar att xylitol både kan bidra till att minska kaloriintaget och öka fettförbränningen.
Förutom att vara bra för tandhälsan har forskare även upptäckt att xylitol har unika egenskaper som kan vara en nyckel till viktminskning.
Xylitol är ett naturligt alternativ till socker med nästan hälften så många kalorier som socker och 75 % färre kolhydrater som tas upp utav kroppen, men det verkar som att det finns ännu viktigare egenskaper som gör att xylitol är så bra vid viktminskning.
Forskning som publicerades i American Journal of Clinical Nutrition2, visade att de som åt 25 g xylitol i samband med maten, jämfört med glukos, fruktos, sackaros (socker), eller ingen sötning, åt 230 färre kalorier vid nästa måltid. Samma aptitminskning observerades även i en studie som Leeds University gjorde och som publicerades i British Journal of Nutrition.1 Den visade att de som till frukost åt yoghurt sötad med xylitol jämfört med socker, åt 10 % mindre till lunch. En del av effekten kan vara att xylitol har ett mycket lågt GI (glykemiskt index). Det betyder att energin släpps ut väldigt långsamt i kroppen vilket gör att man känner sig mätt längre. Men en studie som publicerades förra året i Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutririon3 visar att xylitol kan ha en ännu intressantare fördel för vikten.
I studien3 delades djur som var på hög fettdiet in i tre grupper. De som inte fick någon xylitol, de som fick 1 g xylitol per 100 kcal mat och de som fick 2 g xylitol per 100 kcal mat. Efter en åtta veckors provstudie visade sig både det viscerala fettet och plasmanivåerna av lipider (fett) och insulin* vara betydligt lägre i xylitolgrupperna. Vid granskning visade det sig att xylitolen hade påverkat nivåerna av vissa gener och enzymer som ingår i fettmetabolismen inklusive fettsyraoxidationliknande gener (nedbrytning av fett till energi), vilka var betydligt högre i levern på de djur som fick xylitol. Efter studien konstaterade forskarna att
"Dessa önskvärda resultat tyder på att xylitol kan vara en hjälp i att kontrollera eller förhindra fetma, diabetes och andra ämnesomsättningsrubbningar hos människor."

Xylitol är det absolut enklaste sockeralternativet att baka med eftersom den har i princip exakt samma vikt och sötma som vanligt strösocker och beter sig väldigt likt socker vid bakning. Det gör att du inte behöver använda dig utav specialgjorda recept; du kan enkelt byta ut sockret mot xylitol och fortsätta använda dina favoritrecept!
Tekniskt sett är xylitol i princip lika sött som socker men de flesta upplever den något sötare. Vi brukar därför rekommendera att man använder 50-75 % av den mängd socker som står i det vanliga recept, beroende på hur sött bakverket ska vara. Det blir minst lika gott och xylitolen räcker längre!
Xylitol suger upp vätska snabbare än socker vilket inte skapar något problem när du använder 50-75 % xylitol jämfört med socker i ett vanligt recept. Om du däremot använder samma mängd xylitol som det står socker i receptet, kan bakverket ibland då bli torrt om du inte ökar mängden vätska.
Den enda gången du inte kan byta ut xylitol mot socker helt är när du använder jäst. Eftersom jästen inte kan använda sig utav xylitol som näring behöver du då använda 1-2 msk socker som jästnäring per 50 g jäst, men det förbrukas under jäsningsprocessen och finns inte kvar i det färdiga bakverket. För resten av sötningen i bakverket kan du använda dig utav xylitol.
Många som väljer att undvika socker väljer däremot även att undvika vitt mjöl, eftersom vitt mjöl, precis som socker, ger höjning samt fall av blodsockret. Bättre och hälsosammare alternativ, som även är naturligt glutenfria, är bland annat bovetemjöl, mandelmjöl, kokosmjöl, havremjöl, osv.
Xylitol karamelliseras inte heller precis som vanligt socker.

Björkar har använts utav människor i århundraden. I Nordamerika gjorde indianerna tandpetare från björkträd, och världens troligtvis äldsta tuggummi är en bit björkharts som hittades i Sverige år 1993.
Xylitolen upptäcktes år 1891 men påträffades inte i naturen förrän år 1943 då man i Finland hittade ett sätt att producera xylitol från björkar under andra världskriget då många länder hade brist på socker.

- Gör placktillväxten långsammare och att plack inte fastnar lika lätt.

- Stärker munnens egna försvarsmekanismer.
- Ökar salivutsöndringen och hjälper vid torr mun.
Xylitolens tandvänliga egenskaper är mest effektivt genom tuggummi och pastiller, eftersom de blir kvar i munnen tillräckligt länge. För bästa effekt är det viktigt att använda så kallade "helxylitolprodukter"; tuggummi och pastiller som enbart är sötade med xylitol. Tänk på att de flesta vanliga tuggummimärkena i Sverige som marknadsför att de innehåller xylitol tyvärr har alldeles för liten mängd för att ge någon effekt.

Hur mycket?
Den tillräckliga och rekommenderade mängden xylitol för motverkan av karies och plack är 5-10 gram per dag, fördelad på 3-5 tillfällen.
Hur ofta?
Om du endast använder xylitol någon gång då och då eller en gång per dag, så kanske xylitolen inte ger något resultat, oberoende av mängden. När det gäller tandhälsan är det viktigaste hur ofta; använd därför xylitol 3-5 gånger per dag för att få bäst resultat.
När?
Använd munskölj med xylitol morgon och kväll efter du borstar tänderna. Tugga helxylitoltuggummin eller sug på helxylitolpastiller efter lunch, fika och middag. Även xylitolsötad choklad är toppen till fikastunden eller när du känner dig sugen!
